In general this model is relatively easy to build, however there are a few challenging parts. I would recommend leaving the back open to help you to attach the wings, legs and tail. I would also recommend making provision for extra tabs on the legs when cutting them out. This will make it easier to attach the legs to the body.

This is one of the smallest models I have built so far. The model has almost 50 pieces on just one page and is only 7cm high. The small size of the model can make it a bit challenging (and sometimes frustrating) to build and I definitely recommend using tweezers while assembling the model. I also recommend using 80gsm paper since thicker paper could make this model too difficult to assemble. I do however want to make special mention of the fact that I thought this model was really skillfully designed (especially considering its small size) - kudos to PODragon.

Comments:
This is one of the first papercraft models that I have built and I found some of the folds quite challenging (especially around the ears and the feet). This is mainly due to the fact that there are no instructions for this tiny model. Nevertheless, it is fun to build and very satisfying to finish.

Papercraft in the Media

Papercraft has received some attention in the media, from magazine articles to being featured on G4TV's Blog Watch. You can view the video below.

There have been quite a few articles about papercraft in gaming magazines:

  •  The following article appeared in issue 1 of the N•Revolution magazine, focusing mainly on the Young Link model by Ninjatoes:

  • Nintendo Power also published an article about the detailed Mario and Luigi models designed by Ignatius and built by Dan Hilse (a.k.a. TouchFuzzyGetDizzy).

  • The following papercraft articles also appeared in Nintendo Power:

  • You can also head over to the Paperpokes blog for articles that have been published about their models.

Adam Savage Talks About Papercraft

During an episode of the Still Untitled podcast from tested.com, Adam Savage mentioned that he likes to build papercraft models. He started out by saying, "There's also a lot of really great papercraft out on the Web and I'm a huge proponent of papercraft. It's how I learned to build everything." You can view the exact section here.

Comments:
This life-sized paper replica of the Loki Mask from The Mask is simple to build and a great piece of movie memorabilia. The only problem I have with this model is the fact that the texture creates the illusion of light shining on one side of the mask - I would have preferred a more even texture over the whole model. Nevertheless, it is a great model that can be assembled in a relatively short time.

Comments:
This was an enjoyable model to build that actually turned out to be taller than I had expected. I suggest (in contrary with what I did) that you use the smooth papercraft technique when building this model. That should improve the overall appearance of the finished model. Personally, the only problem I have with the design of this model is the fact that the head, body, arms, tail, legs and feet are all separate pieces that have to be attached to one another. This takes a bit of quality away of the finished model, since it does not look like one complete "solid" model (especially at the neck). The advantage of this, however, is the fact that you can build the model with a more "personalized pose".

Comments:
This is another great model by Ninjatoes that is very enjoyable to build. What amazes me the most is the fact that  this model is able to stand on its own - this just goes to show you once again what a great designer Ninjatoes is. The template of this model is a good example of the effective use of alternating glue tabs, where the glue tabs are on both sides of the pieces that connect to each other (like a zipper). This makes the model easier to build and it also improves the appearance of the finished model.

Comments:
The biggest problem with this model is that the template is very crowded, since all 33 pieces are squeezed onto one page. This can make the building process a bit frustrating. A general problem with a dark-coloured model like Dialga is that if you use the colour overflow function of Pepakura Viewer, it is difficult to see the real edges of the pieces when you cut them out. On the other hand, if you do not use this function any white edges (caused by imperfect cutting or gluing) will be more prominent against the dark colour of the model.

Comments:
This model turned out quite well considering that it was my first papercraft model. Mario is well designed and not that difficult to build. The most difficult part is closing the spherical head, therefore I closed it at the back of the head to hide any imperfections. To get the best result I suggest using the smooth papercraft technique when building this model. If you like Mario and you like papercraft, I definitely recommend this model.
